Getting to Koh Samui: every route, and which one is actually worth it

There is no bridge to Koh Samui. You arrive by air into the island's own airport, or by air into the mainland followed by a ferry. The choice is usually between roughly an hour door to door and roughly five or six, and the price difference is substantial enough that most households end up using both depending on who is travelling.

Direct to Samui airport

Samui has a privately owned airport, operated by Bangkok Airways, with an open-sided terminal that is genuinely pleasant and a runway short enough to limit which aircraft can use it. Flights connect principally through Bangkok, with regional services to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Phuket and Chiang Mai among others.

The advantage is time: from touchdown to a villa on the north coast is commonly twenty to thirty minutes. The disadvantage is price. Because a single carrier owns and operates the airport, fares run well above the Thai domestic norm, and in high season the gap widens.

This is changing at the margin. A terminal expansion beginning in 2026 is set to raise daily aircraft movements from about 50 to 73 and gates from 7 to 11, with runway work to accommodate A320-class aircraft — which over time should mean more routes and more competition on them.

Via Surat Thani, by ferry

Fly into Surat Thani on the mainland, where budget carriers operate and fares are a fraction of the Samui equivalent, then take a bus and ferry combination to the island. Total journey time from Surat Thani airport is commonly four to six hours depending on connections, and combined tickets are widely sold.

It is the route to use when you are not in a hurry, when you are bringing a great deal of luggage, or when four people are travelling and the fare difference becomes the price of a week's groceries. It is not the route to attempt with small children after a long-haul flight.

Via Krabi or Phuket

Both work as alternatives, generally as a flight followed by a long road transfer and a ferry. They are rarely the best option on time or cost from Bangkok, but can make sense if you are already in the Andaman region and want to combine a trip.

Why this matters if you are buying

Access shapes three things about owning here. It determines how often you personally come, which for a second home is the difference between an asset and a burden. It determines who visits — expensive access filters towards longer, higher-spending stays, which is why Samui's rental market skews the way it does. And it determines transfer time from the terminal to your door, which is one of the most common complaints in villa guest reviews and one of the few property attributes that can never be renovated.

The north coast — Maenam, Bophut, Bangrak — sits roughly twenty to thirty minutes from the terminal on the ring road. The south and west can be double that or more.

The ferry routes in detail

Several operators run vehicle and passenger ferries between the mainland and Samui, principally from Don Sak pier in Surat Thani province to Nathon or Lipa Noi on the island's west coast. Crossings are frequent through the day and the sea is usually calm, though services can be disrupted in the monsoon months at the end of the year, which is worth knowing if you are planning a move or a delivery.

Combined bus-and-ferry tickets from Surat Thani airport and from the town's train and bus stations are widely sold and remove most of the coordination problem. If you are bringing a vehicle, the vehicle ferry is straightforward and is how most residents move a car onto the island in the first place.

There is also an overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, connecting to the ferry. It is slow and it is inexpensive, and for a certain kind of traveller it is far more pleasant than a budget flight. It is not a practical route with a lot of luggage or small children.

Seasonality, which affects both travel and letting

Samui's weather does not follow the rest of Thailand. The island sits on the Gulf coast and its wettest period falls at the end of the year, roughly October to December, when much of the rest of the country is entering its dry high season. That inversion is genuinely useful to understand: Samui's peak months are not identical to Phuket's, and a villa here is busiest when Andaman-coast properties are not.

For an owner this cuts both ways. It gives a portfolio diversification argument if you own elsewhere in Thailand. It also means the quiet period lands over the Western Christmas holidays in wet years, which is not what buyers expect when they model occupancy on Phuket data.

What we would tell a buyer flying in to view

Fly direct if you can, and come for at least three nights rather than a day trip. Time the drive from the airport to any plot you are seriously considering, at a realistic hour rather than midday. Drive the same route in the evening. And if you can arrange it, visit in the wet season rather than in February — every property on this island looks good in February, and the ones worth buying also look good in November.

Can you drive to Koh Samui?
